TREMONTON, Utah. If you’re driving on a wet road after sunset, you may have a hard time seeing lanes of traffic.
To find the best solution, they are conducting a major trial of stripping materials and technologies on Interstate 84 west of Tremonton.
“Of all the problems we hear about, alternation is probably the most serious,” said UDOT spokesman John Gleason.
Many of us will agree: it’s not always possible to see stripes on your driveway, especially at night when there’s a thunderstorm outside.
“It’s a very important part of driving,” Gleason said. “You want to make sure you see the stripes.”
Gleason said the road safety industry is working hard to improve signage, but it’s not easy. Regardless of what it’s made of, stripes on the roadway are a hazard on the road.
“Given the amount of traffic we’re seeing on Utah roadways, as well as snow storms and plows, it will take some time for the salt to dissipate,” a Utah Department of Transportation spokesman said.
“We want to see which ones are sustainable and which ones are the most obvious ones because we have so many factors in Utah,” the spokesman said.
UDOT regularly collaborates with other transportation agencies and the private sector across the country to find new solutions.
In recent years, UDOT has begun applying grooved reflective striping to the road, where grooves are cut into the road and then reflective paint is applied inside the grooves.
“This way it sits just below the surface and is not impacted by plows going through it,” Gleason said.
UDOT is also testing another new technology on Interstate 15 in the southern Salt Lake Valley. They added a black stripe that contrasts with the white stripe to make it stand out.
“To make it popular, make it more visible,” Gleason said. “We received a lot of positive feedback.”
“Making our roads as safe as possible is one of our top priorities, and signage is an important part of that,” Gleason said.
