Installed in 2000, the P180WDG is one of 22 compressors of varying sizes in the L&R Roadlines fleet. Its performance has been increased as it is used in tough conditions, with the compressors delivering air and power in a variety of ways across the UK. New markings. On the pavement. The P180WDG is powered by a 4kVA generator, which not only provides compressed air but also hydraulics and electricity to run air guns, floodlights and road maintenance equipment. Despite the tough work, the P180WDG has lasted almost three times longer than expected and is still working perfectly.
Typically, the P180WDG compressor is started at the start of a shift and used during the drive to the job site to power the system that heats the storage tanks and discharge pipes in preparation for the start of road marking work. Once on site (usually at night), the on-board generator powers the lights that illuminate the job site while molten material is transferred from the autoloader to the storage tank, where the compressor’s air-driven paddles agitate the material to prevent it from solidifying.
Pneumatic spray guns are used to remove debris from the road surface. In wet weather, an air spray gun is used in conjunction with an air bucket to dry out areas of the road that need new markings. Once the truck is in place, L&R Roadlines’ skilled operators will operate the air-conditioned feed ducts to accurately direct the flow of molten material onto the road surface, and finally spray glass beads through the air stream to provide increased reflectivity to the road markings. The compressor’s job doesn’t stop there: on the way back to base, the compressor powers the duct heater system, completing the cooling cycle.
The P180WDG compressor adopts the famous Doosan 85mm air compressor and was manufactured in April 2000. The compressor was immediately put into operation without any special maintenance or repair except for the scheduled maintenance every 500 hours.
Graham Mills, L&R Highways Lines Maintenance Manager, said: “We never really think about it and whenever we put it on it works faithfully – it never breaks down on a daily basis.”
L&R Roadlines, founded in 1972, is one of the largest and most respected companies in the UK independent road marking industry. The company operates a fleet of 22 Doosan compressors ranging in age from new to 12 years old. Somerford Equipment, a subsidiary of L&R Roadlines, is one of the UK’s leading truck and machine body builders and specialises in Doosan compressors.
