CLEVELAND — A new robotic street painting system was demonstrated publicly for the first time at Cleveland’s Public Square, marking the first time the innovative technology has been demonstrated in such an environment.
System developed by RoadPrintz Inc. from Northeast Ohio, allows you to accurately mark sidewalks without the need for traditional templates and manual labor.
“This is the first time in the world that city crews have used robots to paint on city streets,” he said, noting that Cleveland city crews operated robotic trucks during the demonstration.
The system is equipped with a truck-mounted robotic arm designed to map pedestrian crossings, arrows and other road markings. Sam Bell, president of RoadPrintz Inc., said the technology could help solve the industry’s labor shortage.
“This could help solve the labor shortage,” Bell said. “We are not taking away anyone’s jobs. The city can’t fill these jobs because it’s really hard work.”
City of Cleveland traffic sign technician Rick Francis drove the robotic truck during the demonstration. He described the operation as very user-friendly.
“The system actually shows me what is being drawn. It allows me to view what’s being drawn, and I have cameras on every corner of the truck so I can see what’s happening on the road and make changes using touch controls. on the screen,” Francis said.
“We can’t look at what’s around us because we’re trying to look at the ground while we’re painting,” Francis said. “In this car, I look at the paint, and the truck protects me from traffic.”
Bell hopes the new street painting system will reduce costs and increase efficiency in cities across the country.
