Sandblasters are great for removing paint and rust from surfaces, but they are not usually considered home tools because they require an air compressor. However, the BLSTRsander is different in that it is self-contained and does not require a compressor.
The BLSTRsander was invented by Belgian entrepreneur Koen Meukens and is currently being funded on Kickstarter. The device can accept gravel of any size and hardness, as long as the width of the individual grains is between 0.2 and 0.5 mm.
The sand is placed in a reusable container on top of the tool. As the sand flows from the container into the main unit, it is ejected from a front chute by a rapidly rotating ceramic disc. Meukens and his team tried steel pans, but found that the ceramic did not wear down from the sand.
Using the BLSTRsander’s physical controls, users can adjust the amount of sand entering the device and the speed at which it is ejected. After all, a machine used to remove paint from metal can damage softer materials like wood.
Other features include hand guards to protect users from injury and a built-in laser pointer to help target sand streams.
It is important to note that the BLSTRsander is powered only by a cord and must be plugged into an electrical outlet. Meukens is not battery powered, which allows for lower cost, optimized performance, and easier shipping.
