Sandblasters are great for removing paint and rust from surfaces, but they are not usually considered home tools because they require an air compressor to operate. However, the BLSTRsander sander is different in that it is self-contained and does not require a compressor.
The BLSTRsander was invented by Belgian entrepreneur Koen Meykens and is currently undergoing a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. The device can accept grit of any size and hardness, as long as the width of the individual grit particles is between 0.2 and 0.5 mm.
The abrasive is placed in a refillable container on top of the tool. As the sand flows from the container into the main unit, it is ejected through a slot in the front by a rapidly spinning ceramic disc. Makens and his team tried using steel discs, but found that the ceramic discs would not wear down under the impact of the abrasive.
The BLSTRsander’s physical controls allow the user to adjust the amount of sand entering the machine and the speed at which it is ejected. After all, a machine designed to remove paint from metal can damage softer materials like wood.
Other features include hand guards to protect the user from injury and a built-in laser pointer to help aim in sand streams.
It is important to note that the BLSTRsander is corded only and must be plugged into an electrical outlet. Makens did not go battery powered in order to reduce costs, optimize performance, and simplify transportation.
