Remember the days when you were desperately studying the Road Traffic Regulations, trying to remember all the signs, rules and road markings because the signs were confusing.
When learning to drive, there is a lot to remember, not just when to brake or how to steer a car correctly. There are also countless signs and symbols that you need to learn, because if you don’t, you will be very confused when you take your theory test.
But when people see a road sign, they start wondering what it means because it contradicts itself in many ways.
This sign means that parking is prohibited here from 6am to 7pm Monday to Friday and from 9am to 6pm on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. However, to confuse the reader, there is a sign below that says parking is prohibited here at any other time, with a red circle with a line through it and the letter P in the middle.
One confused man posted a photo of the sign on Facebook and asked: “Can someone explain what’s going on here? These orange signs just went up a few days ago… did the new signs replace the old ones? Does this mean businesses like my restaurant can thrive and survive if parking is allowed after 7pm?”
Many insisted that the sign, spotted in Sydney, Australia, could have been more clearly labelled as “No Parking” to avoid drivers confusing it with the text, Kidspot reports. One wrote: “If it’s clearly written then there should be no parking or stopping at all,” while another agreed that there should be “free access 24/7.”
A Transport for New South Wales spokesman said the sign was designed to control traffic flow and keep people safe. The no-driving zone only applies on the days and times specified on the sign, after which it becomes a no-parking zone. Different fines will apply for parking outside the prohibited times. The only exceptions are buses and taxis picking up passengers.
