Parking rules are designed to keep Queensland’s roads and streets safe and tidy for all road users and pedestrians. Stop signs tell you when and where to stop or park. If you don’t obey the rules and signs, you may be fined.
You must follow official signs and markings regarding how to park. It is prohibited to park on the verge, carriageway or in an area marked with a solid yellow line or edge line where a no parking sign is in effect.
If there are no signs or markings, park the left side of your car parallel to the road and as close to the left side of the road as possible within a safe distance. If you are on a one-way street (no separation), you can parallel park and park as close to the left or right side of the road as is safe.
This is called parallel parking. You must park in the same direction as the adjacent lane or traffic lane. When parallel parking, you are prohibited from parking closer than 1 meter from the front or rear of the vehicle. You must also leave at least 3 meters between your vehicle and a solid median barrier on the road or a median barrier on the opposite side of the road. In addition, you are prohibited from parking your vehicle where it will interfere with the movement of other vehicles or pedestrians.
If parking spaces are marked on the road, you may not occupy more than one parking space unless the length of your vehicle is longer than the length of the parking space.
It is prohibited to park a vehicle on a sidewalk, painted traffic island, traffic island, bicycle path, public road, median strip or natural area adjacent to a built-up road unless permitted by a sign.
You can only park diagonally or in the center if official road signs allow it. Park at the angle indicated on the road markings of the parking space. Park in the direction indicated by the stop sign.
When leaving the central parking lot, you must enter and exit the parking lot only forward, unless road signs indicate otherwise.
It is prohibited to get out or leave a moving vehicle. Before opening the car door, you must check whether there is anyone on the road approaching your door (e.g. a cyclist). Please secure your vehicle before leaving.
Parking fines are issued by Queensland Police and authorised council officers on the basis of traffic infringement notices. The notice will state the amount of the fine.
Queensland Police is responsible for enforcing parking rules in Queensland. In addition, some local councils are responsible for enforcing parking rules in Queensland within their jurisdiction and setting fines.
In these cases, you can stop for a maximum of 2 minutes, unless signs state otherwise. If you are picking up a passenger with disabilities, the maximum stopping time is 5 minutes.
Rethink road signs. Knowing what road signs mean will help you stay safe.
