On cloudy days in Mallorca, tourists often head to the island’s capital first. For visitors arriving by car, Palma has several parking options. However, as parking is limited, it makes sense to plan your trip in advance. Here are some tips:
- Parking spaces marked with white lines are free. However, such parking spaces are extremely rare and are found almost exclusively on the outskirts of cities.
- Blue parking zones are paid and can be used for a maximum of two hours. Parking tickets are usually purchased between 09:00 and 14:30 and 16:30 and 20:00 Monday to Friday and between 09:30 and 14:30 on Saturday. The rest of the time, the ORA zones marked in blue are free to use. Anyone without a valid parking ticket behind the windscreen will be fined a hefty €60. However, if the fine is paid within 15 days, the fine can be halved.
- Parking in parking spaces marked in yellow is generally prohibited during daytime (from 8:00 to 18:00). These parking spaces are used for loading and unloading goods.
- There are over 20 car parks in Palma. Most of them are located near the city centre. However, the multi-storey underground car parks can fill up quickly, especially during peak periods or at weekends. Parking usually costs between €1.20 and €1.80 per hour.
- You can also book a parking space online at the underground car park Sa Gerreria in Plaza San Antonio. For example, you can book on Parclick and Parkimeter. The average cost of renting a car for three days is 32 euros. This multi-storey car park is located on the ring road in the city centre, about 10 minutes’ walk east of the city centre, and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Other parking options include multi-storey underground car parks in the city centre, in the Plaza Mayor or at the Auditorium.
- You can park your car for free at the Son Moix football stadium. It is located about 3.5 km northwest of the city centre. From here you can take the EMT bus to Palma for about 2 euros.
- There is also a park and ride facility at the Son Fusteret fairgrounds. From there you can take bus number 10 to the city centre.
- If you don’t want to drive your own car, you can use the island’s extensive public transport network. Trains, the numerous TIB intercity buses and EMT city buses give you plenty of options to get to your destination. Buses are used more frequently due to the increased demand in the summer. All intercity buses arrive at the Estació Intermodal bus station in Plaça d’Espanya in the city centre. By the way: the journey will be cheaper if you pay the driver by credit card rather than in cash.
