Rajshahi, July 30, 2024 (BSS) – For the first time, the people of the city and its surrounding areas have a four-lane airport road with a median strip as its flyover and construction work was successfully completed in June 2024.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has undertaken a project to upgrade the road surface from Rajashhi via Shah Makdum Airport to Jihata Bridge to four-lane at an estimated cost of around TRY 326.87 crore.
Abdul Hakim, executive engineer of the department, said they have upgraded 9.65 km of the 66.42 km stretch of the Rajasahi-Naogaon Expressway to four lanes.
In addition to the four-lane viaduct, road safety is also ensured by the construction of a 65-metre reinforced concrete box culvert, road centre markers, road signs and road markings.
He said the road was very important as many ministers, parliamentarians, foreigners and other dignitaries used it to travel to and from the airport.
The road is also a major link between Rajshahi and Naogar districts, transporting agricultural produce, industrial products and goods on a daily basis.
To create a congestion-free environment on this important road, a four-lane initiative was introduced.
Since the site is located in a densely populated urban area, reinforced concrete drains and sidewalks with covers for wastewater disposal were built on both sides of the 5-kilometer section of the road.
In addition to widening nine culverts, physical infrastructure was built on both sides of the 4.65-kilometre-long road section to ensure the safety of various utilities such as gas, electricity, telephone, water and internet.
To better ensure smooth traffic flow and traffic safety, including for commercial vehicles, roundabouts equipped with appropriate signs and signals were built at seven intersections.
Engineer Hakim added that upon successful completion of the project, the width of the road will be increased from the previous 5.5 meters to 25.4 meters, which will help accelerate socio-economic development and eradicate poverty in the area.
