New road markings have people scratching their heads over whether a road is closed to entry or exit. An image of the freshly painted road markings was posted on Reddit because they looked like “No exit, only entry” but had arrows pointing outwards indicating it was an exit.
The image was posted in a post titled “A bit annoying” and there was widespread debate over whether the text or the arrow was wrong, with some claiming it was “an accident waiting to happen.” Comments flooded into the Reddit post, with one person responding: “I read ‘No exit, only entrance’ and the arrow contradicts that. I know it’s ‘No entrance, only exit’. But whoever drew this picture doesn’t know about line spacing/punctuation. Even writing plain bold text ‘exit only’ would help.”
Several people responded, one of them saying, “Yeah, I thought it was the wrong arrow. That sign was a sign of an accident.” Another person also chimed in and shared, “Wow, I would never have figured that out.”
They weren’t the only ones who mispronounced the word, with another person also sharing, “It’s like ‘don’t go out, just go in’. Oh my god, damn the word space. I only took 30 seconds and read the other comments. Got it.”
”Sorry I’m poking my eyes out with a rusty fork. Others just follow instructions, not intentions,” added one frustrated person. Another offered a simple solution: “Draw two NO symbols on the arrow – that’ll do the trick!”
However, due to poor wording, some argue that the arrow is actually incorrect, meaning drivers can only enter the road but not exit it. One person wrote, “The arrow on the right is pointing in the wrong direction,” but was quickly corrected by another user, who said, “No, the arrow is correct. It’s just uneven spacing. There is no entry, only exit.”
Another person advised following the arrows and ignoring the text, as they suggested: “Whether it says ‘No entry, only exit’ or ‘No exit, only entry’, it’s definitely confusing. But there’s nothing ambiguous about those big letters. Arrows.”
