With 12,000km of roads in the county alone, should the local government invest in road marking machines?
Councillor Audrey Buckley thinks so; “I heard the contractor we use is in Tipperary. That’s incredible. We need our own road markings. They’ll be widely used and I think that’ll be great.”
At a meeting this week, Cork County Council promised that the road marking contractor would rotate between the eight council areas every three months.
Councillor Jack White, who proposed the systems approach, said local councillors had a good understanding of local conditions; “I think if we had the ability to draw up a list of sections of road that needed to be built, we could pass that on to local engineers who could then pass it on to contractors and I think that would be a very effective way of getting the job done.”
Cr White was not convinced the council needed to buy its own machines: “I’m not entirely sure about that. I think if you go through an incentive process with an external contractor, we generally see in business that private providers tend to be more motivated to get the job done quicker and cheaper.”
