The regeneration of Hervey Bay town centre continues thanks to investment from the Albany Government and Fraser Coast Regional Council, with construction work currently underway on a $2.5 million car park expansion.
The 168 extra parking spaces will be provided through support of $1.3 million from the Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) programme and $1.18 million from the council budget.
This will provide local residents and visitors with better access to businesses and public spaces in Hervey Bay town centre, which is currently being redeveloped as part of the Hinkler Shire Agreement.
The redevelopment project includes the construction of a new library and civic centre for the City of Hervey Bay. The total contract value for the construction is $108.7 million. Works are expected to be completed by mid-2026. – The project is being funded by the Australian Government to the tune of $40 million, with additional funding from the council.
The car park expansion, which is part of more than $3 million in funding awarded to the Fraser Coast Regional Council under LRCI Stage 4, is being carried out by local company Kirbro Contracting Pty Ltd and is due for completion in December.
The project included excavation work, storm water drainage, installation of curbs and gutters, laying of sidewalks and new asphalt pavement, construction of concrete sidewalks, marking, lighting and landscaping.
The Hinkler Regional Agreement is a partnership between the Australian Government, the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Bundaberg Regional Council to build on the region’s strengths and deliver economic growth and long-term jobs.
“Having high-quality shared spaces and amenities in city centres is of huge importance, but local residents know that the availability of good parking often determines whether they will spend their money here or elsewhere.
“That’s why we’ve teamed up with the Fraser Coast Regional Council to deliver this high-priority local project that will ensure locals and visitors alike can make the most of a rejuvenated Hervey Bay town centre well into the future.”
To quote Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Queensland Senator Anthony Chisholm:
“It is community-focused projects like this one we are delivering through the Hinkler Regional Agreement that will benefit Hervey Bay and the wider Fraser Coast region for many years to come.
”This is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and the demand for quality public infrastructure is growing significantly, and our government is proud to support this process.”
”The council is working with the Australian Government through the Hinkler Shire Agreement to redevelop Hervey Bay town centre, which will include a new library and council civic centre.
“More than three-quarters of the development area will be dedicated to public space with learning areas, conference rooms, creative spaces and large event areas for use by the public during the day and night.
”The new building will also bring hundreds of council staff together in the city centre, meaning closer collaboration between staff and more efficient services for the community.
”As more people come into Hervey Bay town centre there is a need for more parking spaces for both community residents and council staff.
“That’s why we are expanding the car park at the Hervey Bay PCYC, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the new Hervey Bay Community Centre being built on the corner of Main Street and Torquay Road.
