Federal transport agency Austroads has proposed a series of symbols and markings for charging infrastructure, road signs and road markings to make it clear which technology is being used.
In a newly published document, the agency said it wants signage for electric vehicles and charging stations to be standardised and included in the Australian Road Rules.
Austroads’ acting project manager for future vehicles and technologies, Vibeke Matthews, said: “While New Zealand has rolled out charging symbols across the country, in Australia we do not yet have standardised symbols or labelling for low and zero emission vehicles.”
”States and territories are beginning to use a range of different symbols without a clear national standard, which can result in signs that are confusing to road users.
”There is an urgent need to develop and adopt standardised signage across Australia and, where possible, harmonise with New Zealand signage to assist road users in identifying and using LZEV related infrastructure, minimising confusion and ensuring road safety.”
Although there are already quite a few signs and markings for electric vehicles, there are still some differences between states.
The report examines five categories of vehicle-related symbols: general battery electric vehicle (BEV) symbols, BEV charging, BEV charging stations, hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and associated refueling infrastructure, and BEV and FCEV lane/road access.
We will consider testing many of the symbols that fall into these categories to ensure that they are easily understood by road users without explanation.
