The Australian Government is implementing a $245 million road safety plan that includes innovative technologies to ensure the safety of not only drivers, but also cyclists and pedestrians.
The most interesting aspect of the plan is the introduction of photoluminescent road markings that glow in the dark. Like the plastic stars you hung on your bedroom ceiling as a child, the lines on the road look completely normal during the day, but when night falls, they shine like stars.
According to Victoria, the innovation will help motorists “more clearly identify intersections and turns” and will significantly improve reaction time to upcoming road conditions.
Victorian company Tarmac Linemarking shared photos of the glow-in-the-dark road markings being trialled on their Facebook page, and they are impressive to say the least. Even in complete darkness, the lines on the road are clearly visible thanks to the special coating.
Tarmac Linemarking says the new technology will be “an excellent product for walkways, bike paths, roads, boat ramps and many other applications.”
Not only will this make it easier for drivers to stop between lines at night, but it will also make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to stop between lines. Let’s hope this idea catches on and spreads to more parts of the world as we see no downside to a more obvious road line.
In addition to photoluminescent road linings, the government will also install LED sidewalks and other more reflective road markings near intersections.
