The final works on the A18 Road Safety Improvement Scheme, including anti-slip surfacing and lane alignment, have now been completed.
The project introduces a number of improvements aimed at reducing current and future road safety risks for all users of the A18. Improvements include new roundabouts, lane widening, right-turn facilities and reduced speed limits.
In 2018, North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) and the EQUANS Recovery Partnership, along with Lincolnshire County Council, were awarded £2.8 million in combined funding from the Department for Transport’s Road Safety Fund.
The first phase of works commenced on site in January 2020 and focused on the road between the A18/A46 junction and Laceby Manor Golf Club. Lanes were widened and right turn lanes were introduced at both the Oaklands Hotel and Laceby Manor Golf Club. In addition, vehicle safety barriers were installed and the access road was repaved and resurfaced.
The second phase will see road resurfacing work carried out on a section of the A18 known as Waterdell, between the Waltham Road and Mount Ashby junction.
The third stage involves the creation of a right turn lane from Barton Street to Atterby within the Lincolnshire County Council boundaries at the junction of Barton Street and Lincoln Gate.
The fourth stage will begin in September 2021 with the construction of a roundabout at the A18 Waltham Road junction to replace the previous T-junction. Work was largely completed in December and the road reopened.
The project is controlled and managed by the Council and EQUANS, with the works carried out by contractor engineers CR Reynolds.
